In a new turn of events, Sony is set to release the first film starring Miles Morales in 2018.
In 2015, we learned that Lego Movie and the standalone Han Solo movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller would be writing an animated Spider-Man film. Earlier today, Sony Pictures confirmed that the movie was happening, and announced that the film would feature Miles Morales, rather than Peter Parker.
This untitled Spider-Man film will be directed by Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey and will not be related to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe that includes Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Avengers. Inspite of that, it’s exciting to see Morales get his big-screen debut, especially after three cinematic iterations of Peter Parker.
The idea of getting a non-white Spidey on the big screen has been building momentum among fans for some time now. Miles was created for the Ultimate Marvel universe after writer Brian Michael Bendis was inspired by Donald Glover’s campaign to take on the role in The Amazing Spider-Man. In 2015, the character officially adopted the Spider-Man moniker.
