20th Century Fox released the second trailer of Logan, showing off even more from the final Wolverine movie with Hugh Jackman. This movie will serve as the third installment in the Wolverine standalone movies and the 10th movie in the Fox-Marvel Universe. The film is a highly anticipated one as this is supposed to be Hugh Jackman’s last outing as our beloved Wolverine.
Logan is inspired from the comic book issue Old Man Logan, an eight issue series written by Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven for Marvel Comics starting in 2008. In the comics, the events take place in an alternate universe designated as Earth-807128 where Logan has completely refused to use his claws.
We, at The Noob Knows, have tried to analyze the trailer for Easter eggs and possible references to the comics. Check them out.
- Introducing X-23
In the beginning of the trailer, we have shots of a young Laura Kinney (X-23) in a departmental store in Texas. She steals stuff and lashes onto a protesting worker, forcing Logan to come and pacify her.
The character first debuted in animated television series X-Men: Evolution and came into the comics in the NYX series. She is the clone daughter of Wolverine.
- X-Men comic issues
It seems we have comics inspired by the X-Men characters in this world. Logan flips through Laura’s copies of The Uncanny X-Men Issues 117 and 132, and tells Laura in the presence of Professor X that “in the real world, people die”.
In these comic issues, the X-Men defeat the evil villain lizard Sauron to save the world.
- Donald Pierce and his plans
The second Logan trailer gave us a closer look at Donald Pierce and his cyborg hand. Pierce first appeared in The Uncanny X-Men Issue 132 as a member of the villainous Hellfire Club.
In this trailer, Pierce wants Logan to hand over X-23 to him.
- X-23 goes full berserk
Next, we see Laura’s iconic two claws as she slices up Donald Pierce’s men. The shape of her claws is accurate from the comics.
- First look at Dr. Zander Rice
We get a look at Dr. Zander Rice from Marvel Comics, played by Richard E. Grant.
In the comics, Rice works on recreating the Weapon X experiment and is responsible for the creation of X-23. Rice mistreats and abuses Laura Kinney, who he calls “Pet” and “Animal”. Expect some traumatic flashbacks involving Laura.
- Wolverine loses his healing power?
We know Logan to be pratically immortal as his extreme healing power helps him recover from any wound suferred during battle. In the trailer, we see bloodied hands of Logan after the gunfight sequences involving him and Laura. Has Logan lost his healing powers?
- Death of Professor X?
Marvel Comics has a notorious reputation for killing off its characters and reviving them in later issues. Professor X is one such character who has been killed many a times in the comic books. Be it in Avengers vs X-Men storyline or the Uncanny X-Men, readers have seen Charles Xavier being killed off in several issues.
Logan is not only Hugh Jackman’s last hurrah as Wolverine, it is also supposed to be Patrick Stewart’s final movie as the iconic bald headed Professor X.
So does Fox kill off our beloved Professor? We have to wait till March to find out.
Starring Hugh Jackman, Sir Patrick Stewart, Eriq La Salle, Stephen Merchant, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez, Logan is coming to theatres on March 3, 2017.
