Justice League Dark, directed by Jay Olivia, released today digitally and the movie continued the trend of quality work in the DC Animated Universe.
The movie which is based upon the characters from the Justice League Dark issues of The New 52, had earlier received an R rating.
The movie put light on DC comics’ occult and offbeat characters, while dealing with the mysteries of the magical world. Featuring Batman (voiced by Jason O’Mara) and the members of the Justice League Dark – John Constantine (Matt Ryan), Zatanna (Camilla Luddington), Deadman (Nicholas Turturro), Etrigan the Demon (Ray Chase), and Swamp Thing (Roger Cross), the movie focused on supernatural threats and dangers, handling which is deemed unfit for the traditional Justice League.
The following paragraph will contain Spoilers for the movie. So if you haven’t seen the movie, progress on your own risk.
Then story starts with cases of public hallucinating and seeing ‘demons’; a situation which is alien to the members of the Justice League. Situation goes out of hand when a man threatens to kill his wife and children (after being possessed by magical entities). Batman pays a visit to John Constantine at the House of Mystery, who were then joined by Zatanna, Deadman and Swamp Thing.
We see the origins of Etrigan the Slayer, Jason Blood and we had a look at Merlin. The team first came up against Felix Faust, who was defeated by Zatanna using her powerful magic. Later, they faced off against Destiny, who had been defeated 500 years ago by Etrigan and Merlin, and was looking for revenge.
In the final showdown, Destiny faced off against Zatanna, Etrigan and Swamp Thing in the busy streets of Metropolis. When they were being overpowered, Deadman manages to possess the villain and finally Constantine was able to defeat him.
The story was more or less linear, as we have seen in the other movies animated movies based on The New 52. The animation team and the voice cast have done a great job, while the length of the movie at 1hr 15mins was just perfect.
DC Animated Universe will continue to expand with Teen Titans: Judas Contract scheduled to release later this year. Read about that news here.
Justice League Dark will see a physical release on DVD and Blu-ray on February 7.
