Marvel Entertainment has officially announced a brand-new video game staring Earth’s mightiest heroes which is set to come from publisher Square Enix and developers Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. The game will focus on a completely new Universe, and will not pertain to existing storylines from comics or movies. We are yet to know about the gameplay mechanics or kind of game being developed.
Called The Avengers Project, Marvel released a trailer which is titled – #REASSEMBLE, which hints that the heroes are down and they will have to fight their way to win.
The trailer begins with a shot of shattered glasses belonging to Bruce Banner. As we proceed, we see Thor’s hammer resting in rubble, Iron Man’s arm lay damaged, Captain America’s tattered shield and at the end, we see the Avengers logo implying that our Heroes have a job in hand. “The World will always need Heroes, they just need to reassemble” said the female voice, possibly Captain Marvel or any of the female superheroes in Marvel Comics.
Jay Ong, Senior Vice President, Games & Innovation, Marvel Entertainment said during the launch – “The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.”
We still have question mark on the characters available in the game. Sony have the rights to Spiderman and it is unlikely that Peter Parker will be available in the game (But Marvel Studios bargained him into MCU, so who knows!). The availability of the X-Men and mutants, as well as the Fantastic Four, remains in doubt but we hope to get a clearer picture soon.
Crystal Dynamics is most notable for their Tomb Raider franchise, whereas Eidos Montréal worked with Crystal Dynamics on both of the rebooted Tomb Raider games also, in addition to their own work on Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Thief, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Marvel has a multi-year, multi-year partnership which means that we will have sequels to the original game. We know very little at this point as we did not get to see any gameplay footage. But understandably, the work is going on and we hope to see the game in 2018.
How excited are you about this? Tell us in the comments.
