J.K Rowling has been brilliantly introducing her “Wizarding World” to the many generations of the “muggle readers” and their movie series has been catering to the wider aspect of the audience who find themselves bored while reading. It was the imagination of hers that led her to pen down the whole Harry Potter series. Though we are undeniably moot to consider it merely an imagination, we’ll better refer to it as a different world altogether.
The Harry Potter series had a worldwide impact on children, teenagers and even adults, who were enthralled and petrified in the very charm and originality of the Hogwarts castle and their lessons. We accepted the Hogwarts castle as our home and the wizards as our family. Though we were not lucky enough to have got our acceptance letters, the Pottermore website launched by J.K Rowling made our all-time ranting come true as we got the chance to have our own wand, own house and our own Patronus. The quizzes help us to get a real life insight into our own personalities and behaviors and their equivalence in the situations of the Wizarding World. The different articles by J.K Rowling that are published routinely provide a deeper understanding on the various characters and the various plot points. The website even had the feature of casting spells with their respective wand movements which is no longer available, unfortunately. Anyway, this Pottermore website served as an important factor to strengthen our belief in the Wizarding World as well as our sense of belonging to it. Thus, the Pottermore website serves as the 1st step towards expanding the reach of the Wizarding World.
On reference to the Pottermore website, there’s also mention of one more Wizarding school in North America named Ilvermorny School of Wizardry and Witchcraft. The founder being Isolt Sayre, she has a relation to the Harry Potter world as she is one of the Heirs of Slytherin being related to the Gaunt family. Her inability to attend Hogwarts led her to establish a new school away from the negativity of her foster mother, also her aunt. Pottermore even has a feature to determine our Ilvermorny house. The four houses being, Horned Serpent, Thunderbird, Pukwudgie and Wampus. This mention and very limited knowledge of a new school opens a whole new area of possibilities and great cross overs which shall be discussed very soon. Thus, the Ilvermorny School of Wizardry and Witchcraft serves as the 2nd step of expansion of the Universe.
The very thought of finishing the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was something that’s still very emotional and heart wrenching, thanks to J.K Rowling, but this marked the onset of the widespread flurry of ideas in the shape of fan fictions. Fans from all over the world penned down their imaginations and fantasies based on their interpretations of the series of events. The various fan fictions provided a temporary relief and escape for the fans who couldn’t get over the ending of the series. Keeping in mind the hearty wishes of the fans to know more about the 2nd generation of wizards, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne with the approval of J.K Rowling, of course penned down a play named Harry Potter and the Cursed Child that deals with the life in Hogwarts after 1998. Children of our beloved trio along with the not-so-favorite Draco Malfoy’s son have their adventures. They even have the ghosts of the past haunting them and their parents. We also get to see the alternate universe where Harry Potter gets defeated and Lord Voldemort is victorious. That’s one pathetic universe you won’t want me to talk about. Anyway, the endeavors of John and Jack is to be appreciated for adding a new book to the series (though many of us don’t even consider it as a book, these guys deserve their share for their work). This makes Harry Potter and the Cursed Child a 3rd step to expand the universe.
Who would’ve thought that a simple book in the first year curriculum could happen to be the new creation of J.K Rowling? Yes, I’m talking about the Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them movie that’s a spin off set in America, around 50 years before the time of Harry. Newt Scamander, known for his love for animals and magical creatures is the protagonist of the story. Newt and his case full of magical creatures provide us a new aspect of the Wizarding World that deals with the creatures and their care. This movie provides a great platform for the cross over between the two Wizarding schools as I’ve mentioned earlier by portraying the love affair between Newt and Tina. The movie lets us to have a proper understanding of Wizarding laws in different countries along with the comparison of MACUSA with the Ministry of Magic. The movie even features the details of the great duel between Albus Dumbledore and Gallert Grindelwald which was otherwise overshadowed in the Harry Potter series. One more aspect of the Wizarding world is the existence of Obscurus which was ignored in the Harry Potter Series. The analysis of the character of Credence and his struggle led us to ascertain the fact that Ariana Dumbledore was an Obscurus too, which was never explained in the Harry Potter books. So, we are eagerly waiting for the sequel of the movie that’ll clear many more of our doubts and confirm many more of our hypothesis regarding the Wizarding World. This forms the 4th step for the expansion of the Wizarding World.
Many other works of J.K Rowling like the ‘Quidditch through the Ages’, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them’, and the upcoming ‘Hogwarts-A History’ provides us deeper knowledge about the things that aren’t explained otherwise. Even these are the expansions of the Wizarding World.
Hope J.K Rowling keeps on weaving words from her mighty pen to give us more insight into the Wizarding World of her creation, which may be an original world and an actual universe altogether. We’ll keep on expecting more from her as we, Potterheads are too stubborn to let go.
“Whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.” – J.K Rowling
