JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK review [Contains Spoiler]

Justice League Dark, directed by Jay Olivia, released today digitally and the movie continued the trend of quality work in the DC Animated Universe.
The movie which is based upon the characters from the Justice League Dark issues of The New 52, had earlier received an R rating.

The movie put light on DC comics’ occult and offbeat characters, while dealing with the mysteries of the magical world. Featuring Batman (voiced by Jason O’Mara) and the members of the Justice League Dark – John Constantine (Matt Ryan), Zatanna (Camilla Luddington), Deadman (Nicholas Turturro), Etrigan the Demon (Ray Chase), and Swamp Thing (Roger Cross), the movie focused on supernatural threats and dangers, handling which is deemed unfit for the traditional Justice League.

The following paragraph will contain Spoilers for the movie. So if you haven’t seen the movie, progress on your own risk.

Then story starts with cases of public hallucinating and seeing ‘demons’; a situation which is alien to the members of the Justice League. Situation goes out of hand when a man threatens to kill his wife and children (after being possessed by magical entities). Batman pays a visit to John Constantine at the House of Mystery, who were then joined by Zatanna, Deadman and Swamp Thing.

We see the origins of Etrigan the Slayer, Jason Blood and we had a look at Merlin. The team first came up against Felix Faust, who was defeated by Zatanna using her powerful magic. Later, they faced off against Destiny, who had been defeated 500 years ago by Etrigan and Merlin, and was looking for revenge.
In the final showdown, Destiny faced off against Zatanna, Etrigan and Swamp Thing in the busy streets of Metropolis. When they were being overpowered, Deadman manages to possess the villain and finally Constantine was able to defeat him.

The story was more or less linear, as we have seen in the other movies animated movies based on The New 52. The animation team and the voice cast have done a great job, while the length of the movie at 1hr 15mins was just perfect.

DC Animated Universe will continue to expand with Teen Titans: Judas Contract scheduled to release later this year. Read about that news here.
Justice League Dark will see a physical release on DVD and Blu-ray on February 7.

Voice cast for ‘Teen Titans: Judas Contract’ and other news

The DC Universe is expanding rapidly with live-action movies and comic books gaining success each year. But another aspect in which DC is excelling is their animated movies. With the announcement of Justice League Dark, which will release this year, we also have ‘Teen Titans: Judas Contract’ for our amusement.

Warner Bros. Animation, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment have officially revealed the first look at their upcoming animated film Teen Titans: Judas Contract, including photos from the film and the full voice cast.

The ensemble voice cast will include actress Christina Ricci as Terra while actor Miguel Ferrer, who passed away recently, has given voice to villain Deathstroke. The cast also includes returning DC animation voice actors Sean Maher as Dick Grayson / Nightwing, Kari Wahlgren as Koriand’r / Starfire, Jake T. Austin as Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle, Taissa Farmiga as Raven, Brandon Soo Hoo as Garfield Logan / Beast Boy, and Stuart Allan as Damian Wayne / Robin.

Directed by Sam Liu (Justice League vs. Teen Titans) from a screenplay by Ernie Altbacker, the film adapts the classic comic from Marv Wolfman and George Perez. ‘The Judas Contract’ was a four-part storyline originally printed in issues #42-44 of Tales of the Teen Titans and concluded in the 1984 Tales of the Teen Titans Annual. The storyline was significant for several reasons. Firstly, it reveals the secret origin of Deathstroke, arguably the Titans’ most notorious adversary and also paved the way for Terra into the DC Universe. In addition, this storyline presents the first appearance of Dick Grayson under his new costume and code-name Nightwing. With the legacy of Robin forever behind him, he maintained the Nightwing identity until he became Batman for a brief period of time.

LOGAN trailer Easter eggs and references

20th Century Fox released the second trailer of Logan, showing off even more from the final Wolverine movie with Hugh Jackman. This movie will serve as the third installment in the Wolverine standalone movies and the 10th movie in the Fox-Marvel Universe. The film is a highly anticipated one as this is supposed to be Hugh Jackman’s last outing as our beloved Wolverine.

Logan is inspired from the comic book issue Old Man Logan, an eight issue series written by Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven for Marvel Comics starting in 2008. In the comics, the events take place in an alternate universe designated as Earth-807128 where Logan has completely refused to use his claws.

We, at The Noob Knows, have tried to analyze the trailer for Easter eggs and possible references to the comics. Check them out.

  1. Introducing X-23
    Laura Kinney. Credits: Fox

In the beginning of the trailer, we have shots of a young Laura Kinney (X-23) in a departmental store in Texas. She steals stuff and lashes onto a protesting worker, forcing Logan to come and pacify her.

The character first debuted in animated television series X-Men: Evolution and came into the comics in the NYX series. She is the clone daughter of Wolverine.

  2. X-Men comic issues
Logan with the X-Men issues. Credits: Fox

It seems we have comics inspired by the X-Men characters in this world. Logan flips through Laura’s copies of The Uncanny X-Men Issues 117 and 132, and tells Laura in the presence of Professor X that “in the real world, people die”.

In these comic issues, the X-Men defeat the evil villain lizard Sauron to save the world.

  3. Donald Pierce and his plans
    Donald Pierce. Credits: Fox

The second Logan trailer gave us a closer look at Donald Pierce and his cyborg hand. Pierce first appeared in The Uncanny X-Men Issue 132 as a member of the villainous Hellfire Club.

In this trailer, Pierce wants Logan to hand over X-23 to him.

  4. X-23 goes full berserk
    X-23 claws. Credits: Fox

    X-23. Credits: Marvel Comics

Next, we see Laura’s iconic two claws as she slices up Donald Pierce’s men. The shape of her claws is accurate from the comics.

  5. First look at Dr. Zander Rice
Dr. Zander Rice and Donald Pierce

We get a look at Dr. Zander Rice from Marvel Comics, played by Richard E. Grant.

In the comics, Rice works on recreating the Weapon X experiment and is responsible for the creation of X-23. Rice mistreats and abuses Laura Kinney, who he calls “Pet” and “Animal”. Expect some traumatic flashbacks involving Laura.

  6. Wolverine loses his healing power?
    Credits: Fox

We know Logan to be pratically immortal as his extreme healing power helps him recover from any wound suferred during battle. In the trailer, we see bloodied hands of Logan after the gunfight sequences involving him and Laura. Has Logan lost his healing powers?

  7. Death of Professor X?
    Credits: Fox

Marvel Comics has a notorious reputation for killing off its characters and reviving them in later issues. Professor X is one such character who has been killed many a times in the comic books. Be it in Avengers vs X-Men storyline or the Uncanny X-Men, readers have seen Charles Xavier being killed off in several issues.

Logan is not only Hugh Jackman’s last hurrah as Wolverine, it is also supposed to be Patrick Stewart’s final movie as the iconic bald headed Professor X.

    Credits: Fox

So does Fox kill off our beloved Professor? We have to wait till March to find out.

Starring Hugh Jackman, Sir Patrick Stewart, Eriq La Salle, Stephen Merchant, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez, Logan is coming to theatres on March 3, 2017.

Injustice 2 Story Trailer Breakdown

Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios have released a new story trailer for Injustice 2 titled ‘The Lines are Redrawn’.

The trailer confirms a few new characters for the game, including the plot’s main villain, Brainiac, as well as Poison Ivy, Supergirl, Robin, and the pre-order exclusive, Darkseid!

With a focus on the duality of these characters, a mystery narrator evaluates several DC Comics favorites, like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.

The second game in this series starts after the aftermath of the first game, during which Batman led a resistance against Superman’s tyrannical regime. Injustice: Gods Among Us told us the story of a world where Superman snapped, and used his powers to become not just judge, jury, and executioner over the villains of the DCU, but eventually a dictator, ruling over the world with his fist of steel. In the sequel, Batman is trying to put society back together, but is having to contest with heroes and villains that want to see Superman return to power. The video teases new allegiances, with former allies such as Batman and Robin facing off in battle as enemies.

We got brief shots of Superman killing the Joker after the death of Lois Lane, who is pregnant. In the 2013 Injustice comics, we saw Joker trick Superman into thinking that his pregnant wife is ultra-powerful villain Doomsday.

In the end, Brainiac is revealed to be the narrator of the story. From the trailer, it looks like Brainiac wants to thin the herd of super-powered individuals on Earth before he comes to take over, and that will be the primary impetus for them to go at each other once again.

Injustice 2 release for Playstation 4 and Xbox One on May 16, 2017. Read our first look discussion here –  Injustice 2.

Marvel’s Defenders news and more

Marvel’s foray into Netflix is lauded as a positive step in comic book circles after the production keeps on giving us quality content. The shows tries to be comic-book accurate as well as have a dark, gritty tone in an otherwise colourful Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The association which started with Marvel’s Daredevil Season 1, which released on Netflix on April 10, 2015, is set to culminate into the grand Marvel’s Defenders which is set to release this year.

The cast of Marvel’s Defenders had a photoshoot with Entertainment Weekly and we have the pictures:

Mike Colter as Luke Cage. Image Credits: Entertainment Weekly

Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones. Image Credits: Entertainment Weekly

Finn Jones as Iron Fist. Image Credits: Entertainment Weekly

Executive producer and showrunner Marco Ramirez also spoke about the tone of the series and what to watch out for.

“One of the good things about how the other shows all operate is they’re all about a central protagonist, and at the end of the day, they’re not about superpowers. They’re all about someone who has some major flaw and some major crisis and also heroically somehow overcomes it. One of the things early on that I found helpful was not to think about how many differences they have but to go the opposite way and think about how much they have in common.

“And aside from the fact that they are all Marvel characters, there’s a recurring theme here with people who are orphans or people who don’t understand this urge but feel the need to do good and are constantly fighting inner turmoil and having that affect their personal lives. There’s a certain amount of maturity with how they deal with the superhero-ness of it all… We didn’t think about it in terms of how we’ll combine all the tones. We thought about the tone as its own thing. It’s about making sure this thing is something that could encapsulate all four worlds.”

The Defenders will have an ensemble stars of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Danny Rand/Iron Fist.

In addition, Elden Henson will be reprising as Foggy Nelson along with Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Eka Darville as Malcolm, Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth, Scott Glenn as Stick, Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing, Elodie Yung as Elektra, Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker, Simone Missick as Misty Knight, and Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple. It has been hinted that Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher will return for the series as well.

Marvel’s Iron Fist and Marvel’s Defenders will release this year on Netflix.

Villain of ‘Wonder Woman’ movie revealed

Wonder Woman is one of the most anticipated movies of 2016, and WB has already released two trailers in which we have had a look at Diana from Themyscira. But the primary antagonist in the movie was not made clear from the trailers.

Chris Pine, who plays Steve Trevor, spoke with French magazine Studio Ciné Live (via Les Toiles Heroiques) during their set visit about his role in Wonder Woman, specifically how before crashing on Themyscira, Steve stole a notebook containing scientific formulas pertaining to a “deadly gas that could wipe out all of humanity.”

Quoting the magazine, “Behind these scientific formulas, there is a deadly gas that could well annihilate humanity. Now, it turns out that this is precisely the goal of Ares, the god of war. He is jealous of humanity, which is a creation of his father, the deceased Zeus (he was killed by Ares when he rebelled against him, with the help of the Amazons)…”

The character Ares, also called Mars or War, has been taken from Greek mythology where is the God of War and comic book fans know him as an antagonist to Themiscyra for decades.

This isn’t the first time it’s been reported that Ares is Wonder Woman’s main antagonist. Back in 2015, both he and Circe were rumored to be the Amazon superhero’s adversaries in the movie.

Danny Huston in Wonder Woman. Credits: WB Pictures

The Wonder Woman trailer released in November highlighted Danny Huston’s character as the main threat, so it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume it’s him. That same trailer also showed Huston’s character overseeing the development of a more destructive poison gas to be used during World War I.

The movie releases on 2nd June, 2017.
